The Trials of Salem
The Event of Ideals
We chose the Salem Witch Trials, as our topic, because we felt that this event was an interesting part of our early history, only a few years before we gained our independence. During this event, people in Salem were separated because of distrust, sickness, fear, struggles to survive, and believing that witchcraft is real. But after this event, the people came together for a greater cause to create a nation that protects their rights using the ideals they learned from this event. We decided to display this topic in a website. Methods that we used to gather information on this topic was finding reliable sources such as books and websites. We also made observations of our own, that we added to the information gathered, using information already known. What we learned from our research methods is that it is very important to organize information because it is very easy to miss small information, in other information, that is important to the topic. We created our project by first gathering information about our topic. We then organized the information into categories that eventually became pages on our website. We then placed the information, in each category, in order so it made sense to the reader. Then, we added the information into the website. Lastly, we made the edits required to make the information flow from page to page. A problem we had when creating our website was that we both were creating the same pages and changing each other's work. The result was that nothing got done. We then found a solution. We spitted the pages between ourselves to complete. Then, after we completed all our pages, we checked each other's work and improved it. Our topic relates to this year’s theme, exploration, encounter, and exchange because the people of Salem explored ways to get rid of witchcraft and to determine if one practiced it or not, they encountered many accused witches in their trials, and they exchanged the opportunity to end the accusation frenzy with letting their hysteria run free, leading to the execution of many innocent people. After the Salem Witch Trials ended, it had a major effect upon the ideals of the United States including: freedom, justice, religious tolerance, and pluralism. These ideals were the foundation that lead the nation to where it is now, starting from the trials. These ideals impacted the United States because, during the trials, there was a lack of them. For example, during the trials, people who wanted to did not have the freedom to stop the trials, people were being unjust to others, there was no religious tolerance, and there was no respect for people who have independent cultural traditions. To prevent an event like this from happening again, these ideals, freedom, justice, religious tolerance, and pluralism, became a part of the nation.
